AP9 Passport to Fun Offers Safety Tips for Boaters as Fishing and Sailing Season Heats Up

AP9 Passport to Fun provides water enthusiasts with money-saving benefits on fishing gear, safety equipment and more.

Norwalk, CT (PRWEB) July 7, 2006 -- As the temperature rises, so does traffic on our nation’s waterways, lakes and coastal areas, as recreational boaters join commercial vessels to take advantage of our aquatic resources. Increased traffic means increased risks, which is why AP9 PassporttoFun, a leading entertainment discount membership program offered by Adaptive Marketing LLC, urges boaters to learn and embrace the rules for safe boating.

AP9 PassporttoFun members can access significant discounts at popular retailers and restaurants as well as on theme park visits and a wide range of other items and services just by visiting DealPass.com. Members can also save on movie tickets, golf, home entertainment and other leisurely pursuits, including fishing, waterskiing, swimming and more.

AP9 PassporttoFun offers a few simple ways to help ensure that your boat trips avoid the fate of Gilligan and his friends:

-- Gear up. By law, every boat must have a Coast Guard-approved personal flotation device (PDF) for each person on board or being towed. You’ll also need an efficient sound-producing device (e.g., bell, whistle, foghorn) for use in emergencies, heavy seas or periods of low visibility; approved visual distress signals (flares and/or flags); and a fire extinguisher. Boating after dark requires navigation lights on all four sides of the boat (bow, stern, starboard and port) that can be seen from at least two miles away. For additional requirements, check www.uscgboating.org.

For safety’s sake, you should also carry a fully-stocked first aid kit, a portable radio (for weather updates), a flashlight with fresh batteries, a nautical map, suntan lotion, potable water and a small supply of any prescription medicines you or your passengers may need.

-- Get your license. Many states now require operators of boats -- even recreational boats -- to complete a boat safety course and acquire a license before piloting their vessels. Failure to do so can result in fines or suspension of water privileges. Check with your state’s boating authority to learn more.

-- Follow the “rules of the road.” Traffic laws apply on water as well as on land. For instance, when two vessels are approaching one another, each must take a starboard (right-hand) course that will allow the other vessel to pass on the port (left-hand) side of the boat. For a complete list of the “rules of the road” on water, be sure to visit www.navcen.uscg.gov/mwv/navrules/navrules.htm.

-- Use your head. Common sense can help you avoid many boating mishaps. Excessive alcohol use is not only illegal when you’re piloting a boat, it’s also obviously going to affect your judgment. Similarly, running a motorboat at high speeds reduces your time to react to emerging threats, whether they’re submerged rocks, an off-course waterskier, another boat moving at excessive speed or some other risk.

-- Take pro-active precautions. Never assume that the other boat will get out of your way, slow down or even know that you’re there. If highway drivers can’t be trusted to stay in their lanes, your safest bet on a body of water that has no clearly marked lanes is always be prepared for the worst.

If you know what you’re doing and act responsibly, the summer boating season can be fun, relaxing -- and safe, concludes AP9 Passport to Fun.
