InsureMe Embraces Second Place Finish--But Not Too Tightly

InsureMe, an insurance lead generator based in Englewood, Colorado, can certainly claim to be a great place to work.

The evidence -- a growing trophy case -- is plain.

"While it's sometimes difficult to explain succinctly what we do here at InsureMe -- we connect consumers looking for insurance with agents in their area -- it's quite easy to explain that we're one of the best places to work in the country," Lori Reed, InsureMe's director of marketing, said.

In 2006, Working Mother magazine rated it as one of the best small companies in the country. In January of this year, the Denver Business Journal ranked the company as the second best place to work in Denver. Last month, the Society for Human Resources named InsureMe the second best small company to work for the country.

"The trend is pretty clear: InsureMe truly is a great place to work," said Reed.

But there is another trend evident in InsureMe's recent results: coming reeeeally close to taking the top spot.

In the sports world, the second place finisher is often dismissed as the "first loser," the person who gets close to the glory but arrives moments too late and inches too short.

So is InsureMe's excitement at landing on middle of the podium tempered by a longing for the top spot? Are repeated second place finishes more sweet than bitter--or more bitter than sweet?

When asked that question, Robin Paquette, InsureMe's chief operating officer, offered a practical, glass-is-half-full analysis: "Placing second should continue to feed that desire to stretch," said Paquette. "After all, there is still another spot to overtake."

Reed says the company has embraced their consecutive second-place finishes.

At a recent company meeting, every employee received a plaque emblazoned with an irony-tinted "We're Number Two!" Each plaque had a two-dollar bill glued to it.

"Two is occasionally better than one," Reed said. "Still, we don't plan on getting too comfortable with the second spot."
