Back to the Future: New Exhibition at BYU Museum of Art Explores Relationship of Nostalgia and Technology
Have you ever wondered why new inventions and appliances look the way they do? "Nostalgia & Technology" explores the manner in which traditional forms and artful designs have been used to introduce revolutionary new technologies into the domestic space of the people of their day.
Since the beginning of the Age of Discovery in the 15th century, art and ornamentation have been used to clothe new inventions with an air of respectability and social acceptance. Visually appealing designs were carefully contrived to assign social status and to evoke familiar forms of a nostalgic past to which many people could relate — a process that continues to this day.
This exhibition brings together a range of intriguing and beautiful objects from both past and present that demonstrate how art and design have been used to facilitate our acceptance of the strange and unfamiliar.
