Canadian Franchisors Big Spenders on Training

A recent study by training management firm ABA Inc finds that Canadian franchisors spend a great deal of time and money to ensure new franchisees succeed.

TORONTO (PRWEB) April 23, 2004 -- The average Canadian franchisor offers 15 days of start-up training prior to launch and spends $6,140 for each franchise trained, according to a newly released study from training management firm ABA Inc. Start-up training has gained strategic importance in the franchise industry because investors wont sign unless theyre confident they can quickly learn what they need to succeed , says ABA vice president, Ray Belanger. The report, Franchise Training: A Survey of Current Trends and Practices paints a picture of a typical franchisor with a total of 20 units and charging a franchise fee of $25,000. Sixty percent of start-up training takes place at company headquarters, with the balance offered at an existing outlet or at the franchisees new location.

Two thirds of training content is still delivered in a classroom setting by a stand-up instructor, and only 11% is delivered by learning technologies. The real challenge is to get the blend of delivery methods that maximizes results and minimizes costs ", says Belanger who has a background in hospitality franchise training. Franchisors typically spend $1,965 on in-house labour and $1,350 on outside training resources, for each new franchisee who enters their system. Restaurant and fast food operations spend the most time on training while janitorial and maintenance services spend the least. Most franchisors train for technical processes and procedures, followed by managerial skills, safety, and customer service. The white paper is -freely available for download at www.abaconsult.com
