Fairfax, CA (PRWEB) April 23, 2004--19 Broadway Niteclub will be extending the Cinco de Mayo celebration with performances by legendary and award-winning Latin-jazz percussionist, and two time 2004 California Music Awards nominee (for Outstanding Latin Album, and Outstanding Drummer) Pete Escovedo. Proclaimed by many as the latest King of Jazz" (since the passing of Tito Puente), Escovedo has been a major force in the Latin music scene since the late 1960s and his versatility has made him a success in several areas of music, from Latin jazz and salsa to rock and Latin pop. On Friday, May 7, Escovedo will delight local jazz enthusiasts at 19 Broadway Niteclub, 19 Broadway Boulevard, Fairfax, California for two shows at 9:00pm and 11:00pm. Tickets are $20.00 and can be purchased at Ticketweb by calling 1-866-468-3399, or online at www.ticketweb.com.

A California native, Escovedo was raised in Oakland. His father was an amateur singer and guitarist who passed along a love of Latin music, while young Pete discovered and cultivated a love of jazz largely on his own. He and brother, the late Coke Escovedo, both developed quickly as percussionists and became greatly in demand for gigs in Northern California. Then, with their younger brother, Phil Escovedo, playing bass the trio steadily built a reputation in the Bay Area as part of The Escovedo Brothers Latin Jazz Sextet. The group broke up in 1967 when Carlos Santana hired both Pete and Coke for his Latin rock group -- the two toured with Santana for the next three years until later when they formed the 14-piece Latin big band Azteca -- Pete has rejoined Santana a few time since.

Escovedo along with such seasoned bandleaders as Eddie Palmieri, Poncho Sanchez and Ray Baretto, is viewed as one of the standard bearers of Latin jazz, and has performed with a variety of pop artists that include Billy Cobham, George Duke, Herbie Hancock, Mongo Santa Maria, Stephen Stills, Carlos Santana, Boz Scaggs, Cal Tjader, Tito Puente, Anita Baker, Sheila E, Woody Herman, Angela Bofill, Barry White, and many others.

Having performed for over 25 years, Escovedo is now in a place where he can really have fun and absorb the joy of performing without the pressure of having to prove anything. He has won numerous awards including a Jammie Award" for Jazz Musician of the Year" in 1983 and for Latin Musician of the Year" in 1984; a Bammie Award" for Best Jazz Album of the Year" in 1988 for Yesterdays Memories, Tomorrows Dreams; the Purple Globe Award" from San Francisco State College; the City of Oaklands Achievement Award" from Mayor Lionel Wilson, as well as the Congressional Award" from Congressman Ronald Dellums for his outstanding contributions to the Community, the State and the Nation. In addition, he has won the Governors Award" from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences of Chicago, Illinois, and received a Grammy nomination for Best Tropical-Latin Album" in 1989 for Mister E"

Today, Escovedo leads what is widely considered one of the finest ensembles in Latin jazz -- a mix of musicians from both Los Angeles and the Bay Area. Since moving to L.A. a few years ago, he is working more with his daughter Sheila E, and for his album Live!, which he recorded in the summer of 2002. Escovedos sons, percussionist Juan, and his brother Peter Michael joined the ensemble of talented Latin jazz musicians.

About 19 Broadway Niteclub:

Voted the Best Music Venue in Marin County in 2003 by the North Bay Bohemian, and most recently Best Place for Live Music" by the Pacific Sun. 19 Broadway is one of the premier music venues of the entire Bay Area. Located in the charming town of Fairfax, it is a short 14-mile drive north of the Golden Gate Bridge and its central location makes it a major destination for music fans from all over the area. In January 2001, the owners completed the expansion of the nightclub by taking over the building next door, thus doubling the size of the club. A brand new sound system was installed, along with a new and enlarged dance floor, new stage, new lights, and a new Baby Grand Piano was added to a separate Piano Lounge. Since the 2001 remodeling, this little red-brick hideaway has evolved into a world-class night club and host to a wide range of top reggae, world-music, jazz, rock and folk acts who perform in an up close and personal setting that is just about unparalleled in the Bay Area.

Recent billings have included the alt-rock super group Banyan, jazz diva Diane Schuur, jazz sage Mose Allison, the Count Basie Band, R&B sax pioneer Sam Butera, surf-guitar king Dick Dale, the Mammals (featuring fiddler Jay Ungar's daughter and Pete Seeger's grandson), the Sam Kininger Band (featuring the band's namesake and Soulive saxophonist) and AC/Dshe (a butt-kicking all-girl AC/DC tribute band).

Future billings include Los Angeles-based synth-pop group Berlin, and the award winning smooth jazz sensation from Great Britain Acoustic Alchemy
