It is a term coined by author, publisher, and marketer Kailin Gow in her series of books - The Discount Donna Guides, based on the fiction novel, Diary of a Discount Donna: A Novel (due out the end of May 2004).
A "Discount Donna" is a "Prima Donna who lives richly, but never pays full price." According to Kailin Gow, "they are today's savvy shoppers who lives life to the fullest, but are budget conscious. By being budget conscious, they don't necessary shop at yard sales and discount stores, they buy and recognize high-quality brands and workmanship, but buy it at a discount - which means at an outlet, on sale, or off season. These are the savviest of shoppers, and the internet has added to it."
Kailin Gow's years in corporate marketing and mystery shopping led her to coin the phrase, "Discount Donna" when her research led to realize the group she was marketing to was mostly value-conscious high-end shoppers. A self-professed "Discount Donna", Ms. Gow has written a series of humorous short books called the Discount Donna Guides: Discount Donna's Guide to Dressing, Discount Donna's Guide to Decorating, Discount Donna's Guide to Dating, Discount Donna's Guide to Dogs and Other Pets Good for Accessorizing!
The novel, the guides are based on, Diary of a Discount Donna: a Novel, will be released first on Amazon.com at the end of May 2004. It is a high-concept story with warmth and heart. The screenplay of the novel has been written, and the author will conduct a media tour following the release.
