San Diego, CA (PRWEB) May 24, 2004 -- SimVisLab, a private military research facility, has completed the development of a mid-wave infrared simulator (MWIR) for analyzing visibility through helicopter rotor wash under varying battlefield conditions. The simulator allows for the comparison of alternative sensors, including night vision goggles, DTV, and standard FLIR.
Using fluid dynamics, ground materials kicked up from rotor wash winds are simulated over a geospecific, materailly encoded database. The wall of dust, sand or snow is accurately modeled using a matrix of flow fields which react with uneven ground, regional wind and local turbulence. This data is then used to model the pilot's visibility of landing sites and targets through the rotor wash using a variety of sensors in varying regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. The end result allows designers to better understand the ideal sensors to use under varying battlefield conditions.
Further research is underway to further refine the refractive and absorptive properties of the sensor spectrum across varying particulate size and geometry.
