Public School - Private Money North High Boosters Club, Hagerstown, Maryland announces leadership to raise $2.3 million dollars for an athletic stadium at North Hagerstown High School. Hagerstown, MD (PRWEB) May 28, 2004 --- North High Athletic Boosters Club, Inc. announces its Leadership for a $2,300,000 athletic facility Capital Campaign. The Stadium Committee of the North High Boosters Club, Inc. of North Hagerstown High School today proudly announces that Michael Callas, Callas Contractors Inc and Coach Jim Brown will serve as Honorary Co-Chairs for a $2,300,000 Capital Campaign. The funds raised will be used to construct an athletic facility at North Hagerstown High School that will include a lighted athletic field, an all-weather track, bleachers, press box, concession stand, rest rooms, locker rooms, athletic offices and spectator parking. Michael Renn and Mister Rick Toms will serve as Campaign Co-Chairs. A Steering Committee meeting was held on May 26, 2004 at 7:30am in the library of North Hagerstown High School.
Mike Callas noted, Athletics and band are an integral component of the educational, cultural and physical experience of todays student. It can also be a focus of community involvement and civic pride." For 46 years, North Hagerstown High School, the largest high school in Washington County, Maryland and one of the few schools in Maryland without an on site stadium to host home" games, has shared a stadium with South Hagerstown High School. Shared use has worked in the past, but it has continued to become ever more difficult to schedule fair and equitable use of the already over taxed facility.
Coach Brown said, The original stadium sited at South Hagerstown High School was designed to host a maximum of fifteen (15) events per year. This was a time when only two (2) sports were available, boys football in the fall and track in the spring. The times are not changing, they have changed." In 2003-2004, there 71 athletic events and two all day band contests on 44 days of scheduled use of the field." Over the years, boys and girls soccer, varsity and junior varsity, boys and girls lacrosse have been added.
A single field used by two (2) high schools is almost impossible to coordinate, and is a detriment to field condition. In addition, transportation costs have increased significantly. While more difficult to quantify, it is now impossible for many parents to find a way to get across town, to midday or daytime events mandated by field schedule challenges. Having athletic competition scheduled during parental working hours almost mandates minimal parental involvement.
