God Uses Who He Chooses begins in Hamlin, West Virginia, with 17-year-old Jana waiting for her boyfriend, Sean, age 23, to pick her up late one winter night. He pulls up in a hurry: He’s just seen his cousin shot to death in a drug deal gone sour and the killers are after Sean because they think he stole $30,000 from them. They have to leave town now, he says. What about Granny? Jana asks. We can’t stop; they’ll kill us, he says. As they race out of town, Jana shares shocking news of her own.

The adventure portrays Jana and Sean’s relationship and their emotional and spiritual growth as they tackle danger on the run. Their trials pit Jana’s faith against Sean’s worldly cynicism and disbelief, with the outcome in doubt until the final chapter. The couple’s travels take them from West Virginia’s hollows to Alabama’s traditions and dark secrets, then into the shadowy back roads of Bible-belt Missouri.

This is not a fantasy: the action is as realistic and true-to-life as it can be. It contains some violence, but no overt sexuality. The story is appropriate reading for teens and young adults.

The story addresses many of the issues young people face today, among them premarital sex, interracial relationships, the draw of money and the world’s pleasures, and the clash of cultures and generations in a changing world.
