Inside the Bemis - Seattles Premire Cutting edge art show. June 19-20 2004 The Bemis Building is pleased to present its Spring Visual Art show, featuring 20-plus juried artists as selected by Stephen Lyons and Peggy Weiss. SODO, SEATTLE (PRWEB) June 4, 2004 -- The Bemis Building is pleased to present its Spring Visual Art show, featuring 20-plus juried artists as selected by Stephen Lyons and Peggy Weiss, including featured work of The Bemis Building's resident artists. Surely an exhibition of numerous talents, exploring the arts and mastering the mediums into visions of their own.
Twelve previous shows have been presented, growing into what is now a juried exhibition of the arts that focuses on displaying cutting edge artists without current gallery representation. The backgrounds from the contributing artists vary greatly, ranging from well-established practitioners to those completing their MFAs and artists with little or no formal training in art. This is one of the few shows which intimately ties those artists immersed in the academic art community with working artists, many from the Seattle and surrounding areas but also from Portland, New Orleans, New York City, and Savannah, Georgia.
About the Jurors Jurors Stephen Lyons and Peggy Weiss both have made a tremendous impact on the Seattle Art Community, respectively. Stephen is a well established artist and director of Platform, a new gallery slated to open September in Pioneer Square. Peggy Weiss is the Art Program Manager at Harborview Medical Center. Both have juried nearly 100 entries to the show and selected paintings, photographs, sculpture, installation, and other mediums to ensure artistic integrity and overall aesthetic tone for the show.
History of the Bemis Until a few years ago the historical industrial Bemis Building was the Bemis Sack Manufacturing Factory. Parts of the floors, doors and foundation are nearly 100 years old and the hardwood floors still bear the marks of old factory machinery.
David Hutchausen, a prominent glass artist in Seattle, co-owner of the building and resident, converted the space in 1995 into much-needed live-work space for artists. The industrial building's conversion for artists was made possible by a Seattle initiative to allow artists studios and living spaces in industrial areas. Nestled in the heart of the industrial part of downtown Seattle, near Safeco Field, the building rocks with the vibrations of the trains and trucks passing by and provides a continuously fertile atmosphere for resident artists. The building itself is unlike any other and is truly a work of art on it's own.
