The Revolver Challenge was just one of the first events in Philadelphia SportsWeek, 10 days of competitive sporting events, health and fitness seminars, community festivals, a Corporate Challenge, and introducing the first Philadelphia LGBT Sports Pioneer Award culminating in a final tenth day of celebration and diversity - Philadelphia Pride Day.
The mission of SportsWeek (www.phillysportsweek.com) is to raise the awareness, enthusiasm, and participation in sports and to a increase the positive image of a healthy, vibrant and active lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, straight-allied community. Since it has always been the goal of the Pink Pistols to foster exactly these ideals, and to serve as a bridge between the GLBT and straight communities, they were more than pleased to participate.
It was a lot of fun," said Gwen Patton, looking at the First Place trophy. We didnt have as many contestants this year as we would have liked, but this was the first. Next year will be better. We learned a lot doing this one, and hope to make it even more accessible to the Center City community next time." Among their tentative plans are a shuttle van to and from the William Way GLBT Center and a reduced entry fee.
Proceeds of the competition will be donated to The Delaware Valley Legacy Fund (www.critpath.org/dvlf), an endowed fund of The Philadelphia Foundation, one of the nation's oldest foundations. The Delaware Valley Legacy Fund has been instrumental in supporting many good works, such as the Thearapeutic Center at Fox Chase, Victims Services of Montgomery County, the Women's Ensemble Theatre Company, AIDS Services in Asian Communities, and the Center for Lesbian and Gay Law and Public policy. The Pink Pistols applaud their efforts.
The Delaware Valley Pink Pistols would like to thank Classic Pistol Indoor Range for all of their assistance. Without them, this event would have been impossible. And a hearty thanks goes out to Marilyn Lapidus and Don Jost from the NJ Chapter of SAS for providing range officer services. They freed Pink Pistols members to take part in the competition, thus contributing to charity.
