Utah Children's Author Named Writer of the Year

Children's author, Jill Ammon Vanderwood, receives The League of Utah Writers highest honor, The 2008 Writer of the Year Award. She is honored for her published books, service to the League, nurturing children, and community service.

Ogden, Utah (PRWEB) September 15, 2008 -- The League of Utah Writers announces The Writer of the Year Award, Saturday at their annual Roundup. The League of Utah Writers is nearly 400 members strong, with 13 chapters across the state.

Jill Ammon Vanderwood received a plaque to honor her for service to League of Utah Writers. She is recognized for her published books and many writing awards. Her community involvement, fundraising efforts, teaching reading, nurturing children, and teaching writers workshops, are also noted.

Jill Ammon Vanderwood, who was born and raised in Portland, Oregon, currently lives in West Valley City, Utah, with her husband Bill. They are the parents of four grown children, and grandparents of six.

Ms. Vanderwood is the author of three published books for children. Through the Rug (2006), and Through the Rug 2: Follow that Dog (2007), are magical adventures for children 8-12. And Stowaway: The San Francisco Adventures of Sara the Pineapple Cat (available: September 2008 - http://www.sarathepineapplecat.com) is a picture book for younger children. Jill Vanderwood's service to The League of Utah Writers includes positions of secretary, chapter president, contest chairman, and contest judge. She also teaches writing workshops on both a League and chapter level.

Jill's service to her community includes The Girl Scouts, with service as a troop leader. She volunteered for the Literacy Action Center, as an adult reading tutor. She and her husband enjoy volunteering for the Northwest Kiwanis Camp, for Handicapped Children. Jill Vanderwood organizes fundraisers for the Literacy Action Center and the Wheelchair Foundation, donating the proceeds to the cause. Becoming a Wheelchair Angel, For the Wheelchair Foundation, in 2007 she donated ten wheelchairs.
