fSONA Announces New Scalable 2.5 Gbps Free Space Optical Wireless System

fSONA Communications, at SUPERCOMM today announced a new optical wireless system targeted at the carrier market and capable of transmitting up to 2.5 Gbps of synchronous bandwidth. The SONAbeam 2500-M marks another step forward in fSONA's SONAbeam product line offering higher speeds and the longest range wireless system capable of operating at 2.5 Gbps - SONAbeam 2500-M Ideal for SONET Ring Protection, Physical Diversity for Core Backbone Networks, 2.5 Gbps Storage Area Networks (SAN), HDTV Transmission from Remote Field Locations.

Vancouver, Canada (PRWEB) June 23, 2004 --- fSONA Communications, at SUPERCOMM today announced a new optical wireless system targeted at the carrier market and capable of transmitting up to 2.5 Gbps of synchronous bandwidth. The SONAbeam 2500-M marks another step forward in fSONA's SONAbeam product line offering higher speeds from semiconductor lasers and the longest range wireless system capable of operating at 2.5 Gbps.

The new systems are based on fSONA's award-winning SONAbeam M platform that features four redundant transmitters operating at 1550nm wavelength with 560mW of laser power. Like the rest of fSONA's SONAbeam line, the SONAbeam 2500-M is datarate transparent and features scalable bandwidth. The SONAbeam 2500-M transmits from 125 Mbps all the way up to 2.5 Gbps and supports the following protocols: Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, OC-3/STM-1, OC-12/STM-4, OC-48/STM-16. The SONAbeam 2500-M is the most powerful system in its class, with demonstrated error-free performance on our five kilometer test range in clear weather conditions.

SONAbeam 2500-M systems are ideal for carrier applications such as SONET ring protection and physical diversity for backbone networks, military and science applications like backhaul of high-resolution surveillance and multi-spectral imagery, and commercial applications such as 2.5 Gbps Storage Area Networks (SAN) and transmission High Definition Television (HDTV) from remote field locations.

"Our carrier and defense industry customers told us they require more bandwidth for certain applications and the decision to develop a 2.5 Gbps optical wireless product was based directly on this feedback," comments fSONA's Chief Technical Officer, Dr. Robert Carlson. "The SONAbeam 2500-M's speed and range is ideal for satisfying customer requirements for optical connectivity in metro areas as well as for transmitting large amounts of data in the field. An important government customer has tested and purchased the first two links."

About fSONA

fSONA Communications was founded in 1997 to deliver optical wireless solutions that simplify and speed network deployments for carrier, service provider and enterprise customers around the world. The SONAbeam series of free space optical (FSO) networking products use an unlicensed, wireless technology operating at speeds up to 2.5 Gbps and distances up to 5km.

SONAbeam avoids the cost of digging to lay fiber, licensing for radio frequencies, is immune to interference, and is extremely secure. SONAbeam is operational in 28 countries around the globe and was named Product of the Year by Network Magazine; fSONA is an ISO 9001 registered company.
