Philadelphia Car Club Races to Help Disadvantaged Children

SCCA Region plans to raise more than $2,000 for the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation by holding a car race in Al Holbert's honor at Ripken Stadium on June 26, 2004.

PHILADELPHIA, PA (PRWEB) June 23, 2004 -- The Philadelphia Region of the Sports Car Club of America will hold its 15th annual Holbert Memorial sports car autocross race for under-privileged children Saturday, June 26, at Ripken Stadium in Aberbeen, MD.

The Holbert Memorial competition is a tribute to the late Al Holbert, a professional race car driver who was a member of the Philadelphia Region SCCA. Each year since 1989, the amateur racing association has selected a different charity to support. This year the regional club has selected Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation for the strong ties they have to the stadium. Close to 150 competitors have registered for the event.

"This event has grown tremendously since it first began," said Rob Leone, regional executive of the SCCA's Philadelphia Region. "Philadelphia region raised $2,000 last year for the Arthritis Foundation, and we plan to exceed that amount in 2004."

The race begins at 10a.m. and the awards ceremony will be held approximately 4p.m. The top driver for the event will receive a trophy that holds a wheel from Al Holbert's race car.

"This is only one of the more than 2,000 events SCCA sanctions nation-wide every year," Leone said. "The SCCA is committed to the thrill of motorsports, but we are also committed to being good members of the community. This event brings together people with a passion for racing and at the same time, help a worthy cause."

Founded in 1944, the Sports Car Club of America currently has more than 65,000 members and 110 regions across the United States. Amateur racers participate in events ranging from parking lot courses in Solo competition to road rallies. For more information, log on to www.scca.com.
