Auto Truck Group Performs Bio-Diesel Fuel Modifications

The demand for fuel-efficient vehicles has caused one of the leading builders of work trucks, Auto Truck Group, to adapt to their customers' needs.

Government incentives to use alternative fuel, the potential for fuel shortages, and company initiatives to be ecologically friendly are also contributing to the transition to bio-diesel fuel.

Bio-diesel can consist of oil from soybeans, rapeseeds, or even animal fats. Although, diesel engines have operated on a variety of odd fuels, for example granulated coal, bio-diesel posed unique problems. Major issues with bio-diesel fuel are fuel filtration, storage life, storage temperature and the affinity to hold water.

Diesel fuel supports bacteria, termed microbial growth. The bacteria clogs fuel lines, filters and injectors. B20, diesel fuel with no more than 20% biological content, supports these microbes readily. Bio-diesel is less stable over time. Significant degradation occurs with fuel older then 90 days. In cold weather stability of the fuel is decreased. The fuel gets clumpy, like wax, and other particulates come out of the solution. Water, stemming from the amount of humidity, dilutes the fuel, supports bacteria and rusts the fuel system components. In cold weather, the water forms ice and blocks fuel lines and damages pumps.
