Greenpeace vessel Arctic Sunrise calls on VeriLAN for Wi-Fi and VoIP.

VeriLAN, Inc., a Portland-based wireless service provider, has designed and installed a solution that allows the Greenpeace vessel Arctic Sunrise to connect to an Access Point (AP) up to 5 miles away from the ship. While the Arctic Sunrise is alongside the sea wall in Portland, Oregon, she is getting her Internet and phone service from VeriLAN’s Vivato switch on the other side of the Willamette River.

Portland, OR (PRWEB) July 12, 2004

"I received a call from Greenpeace with a request for free Wi-Fi during their stay in Portland” said Nigel Ballard, a Portland-based wireless consultant. “I have the hardware and was happy to donate it, but I still had the problem of how to get access to wireless Internet bandwidth along the waterfront, luckily I knew a man who did, and so I called Steve Schroedl, President of VeriLAN. Steven was happy to provide the additional hardware and to donate the bandwidth, and so within twenty minutes of the initial call, we headed down and hooked them up."

"Usage on the waterfront has seen an increase over the last few months. The downtown wireless network cover most of the downtown side waterfront area, and the network has users who have line of sight all the way up on 23rd and Davis.” explained Schroedl. He further stated "Our clients who get service from their homes enjoy the feature of roaming from their houses to downtown without needing to pay for additional fees."

"We are very excited to have this working on the ship. It will offer us a lot of new opportunities to get our web content and digital video off the ship quickly,” explained Thom Looney, Radio Officer on the Arctic Sunrise. He further stated, "We are amazed at the the IP

phone service. I plugged the VoIP line directly into the ships phone network and we now have a local dial tone all over the ship."
