Local residents Mark Seeman and Jason Kendall decided to take decisive action to get broadband into Market Bosworth in Leicestershire earlier this year, as no other broadband Internet Provider showed interest in providing the service.

Mark Seeman, Chief Executive Office at Pipemedia Ltd and Jason Kendall Chief Technical Officer responded to requests from local residents wanting to benefit from high-speed DSL Internet Access.

“As a local company we wanted to be able to provide high-speed Internet Access for local businesses and residents, who wanted to take advantage of permanent access to the Internet, hosting of domain names and personalised email accounts, to obtain real-time e-mail retrieval and increased productivity,” said Mark.

“We conducted research and found that the large broadband service providers had no immediate plans to implement broadband and so we took action,” added Jason.

They came up with an innovative way to provide the service by implementing a service called AirDSL. AirDSL is Pipemedia's wireless access product used to enable broadband in rural areas where ADSL or SDSL is not available. AirDSL involves installing a very small discrete external antenna to the outside of the customer premises, which has 'line of site' to our repeater station within that area.

Pipemedia’s Engineers then conducted a comprehensive feasibility study, consisting of a three dimensional mapping database linked into a differential GPS system and quality testing throughout the local area. This was to ensure coverage performance objectives were met.

The most effective location for the antenna was to the local church. Jason spoke to Reverend John Plant at St. Peter’s Church, who was very supportive of the venture and gave permission for the Pipemedia Engineers to put up the antenna. On recommendation from specialist distributor Wireless CNP, Pipemedia used the smartBridges product range to deliver their AirDSL service. The smartBridges products provided the most suitable and rugged hardware for such external wireless broadband projects.

The service has benefited over 43 local residents and businesses in Market Bosworth and now serves the surrounding villages, Carlton, Far Coton, Barlestone, Shenton, Congerstone, Barton In the Beans, Osbaston, Cadeby, Sutton Cheney, Shackerstone, Wellsborough, Bilstone and Odstone, with a total of over 150 customers.

The business connection has an Ethernet interface allowing full local network access, where as the home user product has a USB interface to connect to a single computer.

Pipemedia has also joined forces with the Northamptonshire Partnership, one of the seven Sub-regional Strategic Partnerships (SSPs) set up and funded by EMDA (East Midlands Development Agency). Pipemedia is assisting EMDA with the government’s push for wider UK coverage. Paul Randall, landlord of the New Inn in the Northamptonshire village of Middleton Cheney regularly surfs the web thanks to Pipemedia’s broadband service.

“I was delighted with the service I received from Pipemedia, their technical and customer service representatives are second to none,” said Paul Randall.

Pipemedia plan to enable six further exchanges in the Midlands in the near future, extending their broadband service to other local business and residents.
