Rid Yourself of Regrets: July 17th is Toss Away the Could Haves and Should Haves Day" Every major decision we make through our lives affects us either positively or negatively. Even though we make the best choices we can at the time, they are often not the same choices we would make today. When we think about those life-altering moments, we find it easy to say to ourselves, I should have taken that other job" or I could have spent more time with my family." Glenview, IL (PRWEB) July 14, 2004 -- Every major decision we make through our lives affects us either positively or negatively. Even though we make the best choices we can at the time, they are often not the same choices we would make today. When we think about those life-altering moments, we find it easy to say to ourselves, I should have taken that other job" or I could have spent more time with my family."
Author and loss survivor Cheryl Perlitz believes that dwelling on such thoughts prevents you from moving forward. Its time to let them go. July 17th is Toss Away the Could Haves and Should Haves Day." On this day, take a piece of paper and write down your list of could haves and should haves" in your life. Then throw it away, bury it, or burn it. Once the list is gone, make the following resolution, From this day forward, I choose not to live in the past-the past is history that I cant change. I can do something about the present-I choose to live in the present."
Perlitz knows firsthand how dwelling on the past can prevent you from moving on with your life. In her inspirational self-help book, Soaring Through Setbacks: Rise Above Adversity, Reclaim Your Life, (Cameo Publications, $16.95, ISBN 0-9745824-1-7), Perlitz gives readers concrete strategies and survival tips" that allow them to let go of their past and stride confidently into the future, no matter what life change theyre facing. While life-altering events are often not easy, Perlitz shows how these challenges can be wonderful opportunities for adventure and positive change.
With an uplifting message and no-nonsense advice, Soaring Through Setbacks highlights Perlitzs own struggle to live in the present. The unexpected death of her husband and subsequent nosedive of her finances could have left her living in the past, trapped in her memories of happier times. Instead, she decided that life must go on," and she began the slow process of carving out a new life for herself. Perlitz says, Life is full of mountains to climb, and they are challenging and painful. At the same time, they are full of adventure and almost always teach us lessons that we must learn."
Cheryl Perlitz is not a counselor or therapist; she is just a regular person" who has become an expert on loss. She is also a mountain climber and nature lover who enjoys sharing the lessons she learns from physical challenge, from nature, and from pushing our personal boundaries and translating them into our daily lives. She holds a BS and MS in Chemistry and has 14 years experience operating her own business. She is a motivational keynote speaker and has been a program facilitator since 1997. Cheryl also works with families who have lost a child and with children who are fighting cancer.
