In the summer of 1992, just before my third year of law school began at Oklahoma City University, I dropped out. Why you ask? Was I nuts? With only 30 hours shy of a law degree, I must have been; at least according to my parents. I could understand why they thought I’d gone loco. Especially after the way I broke the news. I called them from a buddies house 750 miles east of OKC. I’d moved what little I owned to Nashville, Tennessee……Music City. “You’ve done what???…..Moved where to write songs???….For a living??” Needless to say, I didn’t have their absolute support.

If you’ve ever had the bug or have it, you know the feeling. The feeling that if you don’t at least try this music thing, I mean really go all out in pursuit of it, you’ll never forgive yourself. I was sick with it.

Unfortunately, at that time, my sickness was driving me more towards being famous than perfecting my craft. Garth Brooks was kind enough a few years earlier to introduce me to a bunch of movers and shakers on Music Row. He would introduce me like this, “This is Jeff Wood….He’s thinkin’ about movin’ out here to write songs.” “No I wasn’t,” I thought to myself. “I’m movin’ out here to make records and videos….to be famous.” Man was I clueless. I decided after that first trip to Nashville to give it a few years……to chew on it for a while.

Well, I chewed on it for a couple years back in Oklahoma, writing songs, playing the club scene, all while completing two years of law school. Reality finally set in one night around two o’clock a.m. after I’d played a gig. My best friend helped me move that morning. I didn’t tell a soul……that is, not until I got to Nashville.

A lot of people asked me when I got my first of two record deals what it felt like to have my dreams come true. I would always respond, “My dreams came true when I made the decision to move to Nashville.”

Over the next several years, by the grace of God, and a lot of knockin’ on doors, I was lucky enough to pen a #1 song for John Michael Montgomery and have several songs recorded by many of Nashville’s top selling artists. I was also fortunate enough to have had three top-forty hits as an artist as well as appear on several nationally televised programs. I have had the great fortune of opening up shows for Wynona, Martina McBride, Leeann Rimes, and Vince Gill to name a few.

We are living in unique times. Times where I believe major record labels are quickly becoming obsolete. Isn’t the information age incredible? Within seconds, music lovers all over the world can truly choose what they purchase. I use the words “truly choose” because prior to the information age this wasn’t always the case. Commercial radio slammed down our throat what was or wasn’t a hit. We, the listeners, were basically stuck with what we got to hear or, more truthfully, had to hear.

Commercial radio has become even more of a monopoly over the past decade; basically being owned and controlled by one company.

But thankfully, for the internet, music lovers can listen to and purchase cd’s of talent they would have never been able to hear on commercial radio. What a great time it is for independent musicians and singer/songwriters.

It’s Independence Day!! I am beyond enthused to tell you about a new record label I have started over the internet, Jeffwoodmusic.com. The label offers four cd’s, all highly reviewed, all unique. “Between The Earth And The Stars”, the first cd available, has to its credits, three top-forty country hits. “The Jeff Wood Project”, consists of 15 new songs, many of which are hits to be. “Live At Bellevue Community Church” in Nashville, is a live cd of my original Christian music (all proceeds going back to the church). And the last cd available, “Christmas Unplugged”, is a perfect gift for the holiday season, consisting of eight Christmas classics and three originals. A portion of all proceeds from all cd sales goes to “Feed The Children”.
