2004 Research Award for Studies of Youth (CARE) and Adult (RME) Violence Risk Assessment Tools Presented to Dr. Seifert by Maryland CBH.

Maryland's Community Behavioral Health Organization presented Dr. Seifert with the 2004 research award at their July 14, 2004 conference. Dr. Seifert lectured at the conference about her work on studying youth and adult violence and the creation and validation of two violence risk assessment tools: the CARE and the RME.

(PRWEB) July 20, 2004 -- At its conference on July, 14, 2004, Maryland's Community Behavioral Health (CBH) Organization presented Dr. Kathryn Seifert with its annual research award. CBH is Maryland's association of Mental health Clinics and Psychiatric Rehabilitation organizations. Both Dr. Seifert and CBH are very active in supporting and promoting system reform in Maryland's public mental health system.

Dr. Seifert presented information at the CBH conference on her theory of the development of violence and the risk tools that she has created and is validating and studying: The CARE and the RME. Her theory of violence development involves the complex interaction of each individual's particular combination of physiological, environmental, psychological and developmental risk and resiliency factors. She has developed two tools to measure this complex array of factors and provide practitioners with a risk management tool that guides intervention strategies. The CARE (Child and Adolescent Risk Evaluation, from Research Press) can be used with children and teens of both genders and all ages. Multiple areas of risk and resiliency are measured. A multifaceted intervention plan is suggested by the case management tool. A sexual offender subscale for the CARE is in the research phase.

Based on the same principles, the RME (Risk Management Evaluation, available through the author)can be used with adult of both genders and all ages. The RME has three separate versions: adult male risk of violence, adult female risk of violence and adult risk of sexual offending. Two states have agreed to test the RME in their prison systems.

Dr. Seifert founded ESPS, with a multidisciplinary mental health clinic and a research and training division. In 2004, she will be speaking at the FVSAI Annual International Conference on Family Violence in San Diego, CA, September 19-22 and the National ATSA conference in Albuquerque, NM, October 27-30.
