IBG Releases Software Toolkit for Analysis of Level 3 Fingerprint Features

Software Developed Under NIJ Research Grant is Free Under Open Source License.

New York, NY (PRWEB) October 15, 2008 -- IBG has released the software developed under Phase II of Quantitative Research on Friction Ridge Patterns: Analysis of Level 3 Features at High Resolutions under the GNU General Public License. The Java software toolkit, known as L3TK, is intended for engineers and technical researchers and implements the advanced feature extraction methods required to analyze Level 3 feature data in high resolution fingerprint images.

Level 3 fingerprint features have long been utilized by forensic examiners to compare fingerprint samples when insufficient high quality Level 2 minutiae are apparent. Automated methods of extraction and matching of Level 3 microfeatures have been studied for several years, and IBG's public release of technical implementation of such methods is designed to advance the state of the art in high confidence fingerprint matching.

The software project home page is hosted by the open source project site SourceForge.net at http://level3tk.sourceforge.net. From the site, visitors may download the software toolkit and technical report, view updated documentation, and submit feature requests, bug reports, and code modifications. The open source license encourages users to share improvements and specializations of the source code researchers with the scientific community.

The project is funded through the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), the research, development and evaluation agency of the U.S Department of Justice's Office of Justice Programs. NIJ is dedicated to researching crime control and justice issues and provides objective, independent, evidence-based knowledge and tools to meet the challenges of crime and justice, particularly at the state and local levels.
