Innovative Recycling Program Marks Major Success

Computer Recyclers Inc. announced today that it has passed the 6 month mark in its End of Life Recycling Program.

OTTAWA (PRWEB) August 21, 2004 -- Computer Recyclers Inc. announced today that it has passed the 6 month mark in its End of Life Recycling Program.

In this short time, it has collected over 200,000 pounds, or 33,000 pounds per month, of electronics and computer scrap, material that would otherwise be destined for landfill or offshore.

This e-waste has come from government departments, companies and individuals all over the Ottawa Valley. This is only the beginning. They are currently working on a program to educate companies, government departments and municipal services on best practices for dealing with their e-waste and obsolete technology.

The response to the True End of Life Recycling program has been overwhelming, thanks mainly to environmentally conscious industry leaders and individuals in the Ottawa Area.

Computer Recyclers Inc. strives to reduce its impact on the environment by recycling used and obsolete computer equipment and electronics. Their business is based on these activities, and as such all material received at their 20,000 square foot facility in Ottawa is sent to secondary, accredited processors in Canada.

Their business, in fact, by its nature, is reducing the business impact of other companies and individuals on the environment.

The increasing tonnage of computers and other electronics ending up in Canadian landfill, or being shipped to third world countries for dismantling and the catastrophic impact both practices are having on the environment, locally and globally is alarming. A report comissioned for Environment Canada in 2002, showed that 341 million pounds of obsolete high tech equipment was discarded in Canada, and 308 million pounds of it, or 90 percent, ended up in landfill. This is equal in weight to 28,000 adult African Elephants. In that 90 percent, there was 10,450,000 pounds of lead. By 2005, it is estimated that nearly 10,000 pounds of cadmium and 4,400 pounds of mercury will be disposed of, an integral part of this electronic equipment.

These elements, lead, cadmium and mercury are the leading cause of nerve and kidney damage in children and adults.
