Philadelphia's Winning Ways Are Also Seen At Girls School

Main Line Private School Hopes To Draw Top Student-Athletes With New Athletic Center.

Bryn Mawr, PA (PRWEB) November 4, 2008 -- As Philadelphia (http://www.3greatschools.org) sports fans celebrate the city's first world championship in 25 years with the Phillies' World Series win, a small private girls school (http://www.3greatschools.org) on the Main Line (http://www.3greatschools.org) is cheering its own athletic achievement.

The Baldwin School for girls opened a state-of-the-art athletic center this month after ten years of design and construction. The complex rivals any private school (http://www.3greatschools.org) facility of its kind. The project involved transforming the look of the former Bryn Mawr Hotel, an historic Frank Furness design, into an ultramodern, environmentally green athletic facility. It houses a six-lane pool, an indoor track, basketball and volleyball courts, tennis courts, squash courts, a two-story fitness center, a multi-purpose room equipped with a stage, and an additional playing field.

"Our mission is to offer a high quality athletic program, to help student-athletes reach their potential," says Deb Surgi, Athletic Director of the Baldwin School. "If you're a college-bound athlete, Baldwin should be at the top of your list."

The new athletic center will be a timely asset for students like Baldwin's Jen Newman and Sloan Warren. Newman, a junior, recently reclaimed the Inter-AC League singles tennis title for the second straight year. Warren scored more than 100 goals last spring in lacrosse. Warren is also one of Baldwin's best basketball players.

But Surgi says the new athletic center is for everyone at the Baldwin School. "We want to see every student benefiting from our new facility. They've already said it has exceeded their expectations."

The building is designed as an architectural tribute to Frank Furness, with a Victorian feel that incorporates brick, stone and glass. Its eco-friendly features include a UV-shock system for the pool that uses and emits fewer chemicals. The lighting, heating, landscaping and waste management also follow construction initiatives which qualify the center as a "green building".

Surgi adds, "We want our students to be good community members and be globally aware. Our building is a good symbol of our goals."
