Bush Supporters: The Voters Who Give

GMI World Poll indicates that charities profit more from Bush supporters than Kerry supporters; African Americans are more likely to donate to charities than Caucasians; Chinese and English-speaking nations are among top charitable nations.

SEATTLE, WA (PRWEB) September 14, 2004 -- When charities seek funds, they should pursue Bush supporters before Kerry supporters, according to the latest poll by independent global market research company GMI, Inc. (www.worldpoll.com).

The GMI World Poll survey, which samples 1,000 media-informed individuals in each of the worlds leading G8 economic nations*, found that 68% of Bush supporters regularly provide charity compared to 57% of Kerry supporters. Furthermore, 46% of households who grossed $90,000-$145,000 supported Bush, while the majority of Kerry supporters tend to be middle-class Americans; GMI World Poll indicated that wealthier households donated more than lower income households.

Historically the Republican Party has attracted and served the interests of the business and merchant class; often those individuals who have disposable income," explained Dr. Mitchell L. Eggers, Chief Pollster and COO of Global Market Insite (GMI).

GMI World Poll also indicated that African Americans were the most likely Americans to donate: 75% of African American respondents reported supporting charities, compared to only 62% of Caucasians respondents. Excluding Chinese, Asians were least likely to provide charity, with 44% of Asian respondents reporting to have donated.

The global results determined that English-speaking countries possessed the most individuals who were likely to donate: 73% of British, 78% of Canadian, and 77% of American respondents reported to have donated. Interestingly, 74% of Chinese respondents also indicated donating to charities, which according to Dr. Eggers, may not be the Western traditional sense of donation.

As a consequence of a strong belief in the free market approach, charitable giving is clearly linked to the British heritage," said Dr. Eggers. As for the results received from China, like the rest of Chinese society, the issue of charity is also in transition. For example the term 'charity' means 'public benefit work' in Chinese; consequently, the results obtained in China most likely do not reflect what most Western societies think of when discussing charitable giving."

Worldwide, GMI World Poll also learned that among charities citied as being on the receiving-end of respondents donations, the American Cancer Society, American Red Cross, and UN World Food Program topped the list. Among U.S. respondents, the Salvation Army and Goodwill Industries were the most frequent answers.

Results of both GMI World Poll surveys are available in their entirety at the following Web site: (www.worldpoll.com). Upon request, GMI will provide media with comprehensive World Poll survey results cross-tabulated by variables such as age, gender, geographic region, and where applicable, race and ethnicity.

*G8 nations are the world's major industrial democracies, including Canada, France, Germany, China, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
