Glenview, IL (PRWEB) September 22, 2004 --- We all experience a major loss at some point in our lives. You may lose your job, someone you love may become seriously ill, you may get a divorce, or a loved one may die. These are all devastating and life-altering events that quickly send you on an emotional roller coaster.

While any major loss is an extremely emotional time, you cant let your emotions take over your life. You need to remain strong mentally and physically so you can cope with your loss, move on, and continue to lead a happy, healthy, and productive life. Since October is Emotional Wellness Month," now is a perfect time to focus on keeping your emotions in check and appreciating everything positive in your life to help you through your loss.

Author and loss expert Cheryl Perlitz knows first-hand the experience of coping with loss and the need to maintain emotional wellness throughout the roller coaster of emotions we experience. In her book, Soaring Through Setbacks: Rise Above Adversity Reclaim Your Life (Peak Publishing, $16.95, ISBN 0-9745824-1-7), Perlitz, a mountain climber and nature lover, relates the experience of loss to climbing a mountain. She states, No matter how challenging a physical mountain is, the hardest mountains we climb are the ones we cant see. They are the ones life throws in our path when things are humming along smoothly."

A major loss changes everything in our lives, including our perception of ourselves. One of the keys to emotional wellness is knowing ourselves. Climbing the mountain in our way is not only about overcoming the situation in our path; its also about finding ourselves and redefining ourselves in a new life. Finding our confidence and self-esteem is part of the vision we have for our new self," states Perlitz.

Throughout her book, Perlitz provides practical advice in the form of Survival Tips." One useful tip she gives is to let yourself feel fully and completely. She advises, Its okay to go through a roller coaster of emotions. In fact, its totally normal if you do. Feel the emotions and let them roll over you. At first they are overwhelming, but as time passes, it gets easier and you feel better afterwards." When you understand that all of the emotions you are feeling are normal and you follow Perlitzs other survival tips, you will be better able to cope with your loss and maintain your emotional wellness.

Cheryl Perlitz is neither a counselor nor therapist; she is a regular person" who, through personal experience, has become an expert on change and loss. She is also a mountain climber and nature lover who enjoys sharing the lessons she learns from physical challenge, from nature, and from pushing personal boundaries and translating them into daily life. Cheryl is a motivational keynote speaker and has been a program facilitator since 1997. She also works with families who have lost a child and with children who are fighting cancer.
