TheGreenOffice.com and Dogwood Alliance Announce 'Funds for Forests'

The eco-friendly office supply company will donate up to 7% of proceeds to help save endangered forests.

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) November 17, 2008 -- TheGreenOffice.com, a national eco-friendly office supply retailer, and Dogwood Alliance, a leader in protecting endangered U.S. forests, today announced the "Funds for Forests" holiday fundraising drive. From November 1 - December 31, 2008, TheGreenOffice.com will donate up to 7% of proceeds to support Dogwood Alliance's environmental conservation efforts.

"Because of Dogwood Alliance's successful public campaigns, several major office supply chains have agreed to adopt greener paper procurement policies, including commitments to phase out paper originating in endangered forests," says Alex Szabo, CEO of TheGreenOffice.com, "We are excited to support an organization that shares our mission to green the office products industry."

Southern forests contain some of the most biologically rich ecosystems in North America and are the source of approximately 60% of the wood and paper products used in the United States. Large paper manufacturers in the region have traditionally engaged in unsustainable practices such as clear-cutting, conversion of natural forests to sterile tree plantations and using harmful chemical fertilizers and herbicides.

Donations from "Funds for Forests" will go toward protecting and restoring the South's endangered forests through:

• Encouraging corporations to source their paper from responsibly managed forests

• Supporting the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), an independent organization that provides a comprehensive certification program for ensuring sustainable sourcing

• Performing scientific analysis of species habitat, old-growth characteristics, impact on the surrounding ecosystem and so on

• Ending the conversion of natural ecosystems to tree plantations and other non-forest land uses

• Promoting the use of post-consumer recycled content, which does not require logging

"By promoting responsible forestry practices, Dogwood Alliance transforms the way paper products are manufactured and how corporations do business," says Szabo. "At TheGreenOffice.com, we support independent green manufacturers and educate our customers about green purchasing and sustainable workplace practices to encourage eco-friendly consumer decisions. Both Dogwood Alliance and TheGreenOffice.com want U.S. businesses to commit to sustainable practices that will protect our environment now and in the future."
