Authors Day October 23, 2004 at the Smithsonians Anacostia Museum: A Community Event Cheryl Robinson will discuss the missed opportunity" of A Forgotten Negro League Star and Paula Hines Lonergan will discuss A Titan Coach who Inspired" Generations of Young People Washington, DC (PRWEB) October 13, 2004 -- Bring your family and friends to meet two authors, Cheryl Robinson and Paula Hines Lonergan and the subjects of their books, Al Burrows, a Negro League player, and Paul Doc" Hines, a Coach of the T.C. Williams High School Titans on October 23, 2004 at 1:00 pm at Smithsonians Anacostia Museum and Center for African American History and Culture. This high-impact event with two emerging contemporary authors ties in with the current museum exhibition, All the Stories Are True: African American Writers Speak," which will be on view until December 31st. The Anacostia Museum is located at 1901 Fort Place, SE, Washington, DC and admission and parking are free. The museum offers an opportunity to meet and greet the authors and the athletes, as well as purchase their autographed books.
The ancient art of story-telling is explored and celebrated in the exhibition and a portion of the exhibition is devoted to African American childrens literature. An eloquent local storyteller, Vann-Di Galloway, will also be on hand for the children to retell folktales with historical dimensions that punctuate themes of contemporary life.
Since the museums founding in 1967, it has been an advocate for new talents and welcomes Cheryl Robinson and Paula Hines Lonergan as distinguished authors. Cheryl Robinsons book, A Forgotten Negro League Star: A Personal Look at Al Burrows, tells Al Burrows story of playing baseball in the Negro League-a short time for the New York Black Yankees and later playing for the Indianapolis Clowns-while ultimately being denied the opportunity to join a Major League organization, because of the color line drawn by segregation. The in-depth interviews with Negro League players and fans tell a story often unheard in African American history. The book contains a lot of Negro League trivia, a list of Negro League teams by state, a list of surviving Negro League players and black baseball facts that are not so well known.
Paula Hines Lonergans book, A Titan of a Man: A Coach of the Famous 71 Titans Who Inspired Generations of Young People, discusses Paul Doc" Hines success in developing and inspiring generations of young people in his mind over matter" attitude. Docs success in parenting, teaching and coaching did not come by accident. It happened long before the writers and producers thought about making the movie, Remember the Titans," portraying Coach Hines, Paulas father.
