I am running for the Florida Legislature, because I think that Florida needs a straight-talking leader who will do what he says and truly look after the interests of his constituents." Doug West

On September 3, 2003, Doug’s experience was forever altered.

Responding to an explosion outside of his base near Umm Qasr, Doug led a contingent of Army Medics to respond to a “Mass Casualty” incident into a suspected mine field. Without regard for his own safety, Lieutenant West negotiated the hazards of an unsecured perimeter in order to provide lifesaving medical attention to those injured. Despite critical injuries to three Iraqi detainees and one serviceman, Doug provided lifesaving medical attention and saved the lives of all casualties. The Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) later found an unexploded ordinance a mere 15 feet from where Doug had performed his duties. For his bravery and leadership, Doug was awarded the Bronze Star with Valor Device for his heroism. He was the highest ranked officer in his battalion to receive such an honor. In May 2004, Doug was selected by the Army Medical Department (AMEDD) Board for promotion to Captain.

Today, Doug continues to serve his country by working as a Physicians Assistant with the United States Department of Veterans Affairs.
