Can a Democrat Date a Republican - Every Vote Counts - Tips On Pulling the Right Lever Youve met the girl or guy of your dreams -- smart, funny, easy on the eyes, when the topic ever so gently turns to politics and the upcoming election. As a stalwart Republican, you suddenly realize that your new heartthrob is an impassioned Democrat. Is it even possible to date? BALTIMORE, MD; NORWELL, MA (PRWEB) October 19, 2004 -- James Carville and Mary Matalin have done it.* Could you? Should you?
Youve met the girl or guy of your dreams -- smart, funny, easy on the eyes, when the topic ever so gently turns to politics and the upcoming election. As a stalwart Republican, you suddenly realize that your new heartthrob is an impassioned Democrat.
They say that opposites attract... But in this super charged presidential election season is it possible for a Democrat and a Republican to find true love -- together? On second thought, forget about finding true love -- is it even possible to date?
This question was posed to relationship expert Paul A. Falzone, CEO of The Right One and Together Dating, who offers his insights into the intricacies of cross party dating.
Tread Lightly First of all, objectively assess the relationships potential. Did you meet at a sporting event or a concert? Or at some other venue that led you to believe that you had shared interests? If so, focus on those interests and explore the aspects that brought you together rather than those that could drive you apart.
However, if you feel like you dropped a bomb when you mentioned the R" word, and your formerly pleasant conversation turned into a shouting match focused on the sanctimoniousness of neo conservatism versus the hedonism of liberalism then maybe its time to drop the relationship before you literally need a referee.
Be True to Your Self Be honest about what being a Republican or a Democrat means to you. Since the current political climate is extremely divisive rather than conciliatory, examine which tenets of the party line you consider to be written in stone. What are your heartfelt beliefs? For instance, there may not be insurmountable differences between a conservative democrat and a liberal republican.
Do you differ mainly on tax incentives and ways to create jobs or are your differences rooted in fundamental social and religious beliefs? Can you agree to civilly disagree about certain issues or do you feel that you would need to change your party affiliation to make your potential partner happy? If so, forgeddaboutit! You might be able to switch parties but if you have deeply felt republican or democratic convictions you wont be able to erase them simply by changing your party registration.
Common Goals If you feel that you can agreeably disagree then there may be hope for your relationship, particularly if you share common goals even though your viewpoints sometimes diverge. If you focus on the things that you see eye-to-eye on you may find that youre so busy enjoying each others company that your politics have taken a backseat.
Maintaining your sense of humor is also critical. The ability to laugh at the excesses and hyperbole of both parties can go a long way toward easing the strain. And remember, come November, your votes will essentially cancel each other out!
