Cleveland Clinic Issues New Guide for Chronic Hip Pain

A new guide from Cleveland Clinic's Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, available for download as a PDF, details the common causes of chronic hip pain.

Cleveland, OH (PRWEB) December 8, 2008 -- In 2008, 240,000 people in the United States of America will have hip replacement surgery. However, surgery is not inevitable. A new guide from Cleveland Clinic includes a multitude of conservative treatments, such as ice, physical therapy and pain relievers, as well as surgical options such as hip replacement (http://www.clevelandclinic.org/lp/Hip_Pain/200807_hippainlp.html), hip resurfacing, and recovery.

The causes of hip pain vary. Osteoarthritis, hip fractures, tendonitis, and herniated discs are among the conditions that can lead to swelling, tenderness, and general interference with daily activities. The chronic hip pain guide (http://www.clevelandclinic.org/lp/Hip_Pain/200807_hippainlp.html) urges patients to see doctors if they:

*experience hip pain for more than a few days

*experience hip pain at night or while resting

*notice a deformity in the hip or upper thigh

*cannot bend their hips

*cannot walk normally due to the pain

*develop a fever, with redness and warmth over the hip

Viktor Krebs, M.D., orthopaedic surgeon and director of the Cleveland Clinic Joint Replacement Center, states, "It's very important for patients to identify and treat hip pain problems early in order to avoid more serious difficulties. This guide will provide an easy to read, easy to access resource to patients outlining many of the causes and potential treatments for hip pain."
