Workshop for High School Educators on Radiation Conducted by the Georgia Section of the American Nuclear Society

The Georgia section of the American Nuclear Society (ANS) will conduct a workshop for thirty educators from Metro Atlanta high schools to provide important information regarding the benefits of nuclear science and technology, as well as provide teachers with information on future career opportunities in the industry.

Atlanta, GA -- October 25, 2004: The Georgia section of the American Nuclear Society (ANS) will conduct a workshop for thirty educators from Metro Atlanta high schools to provide important information regarding the benefits of nuclear science and technology, as well as provide teachers with information for students on future career opportunities in the industry. This workshop, Detecting Radiation in Our Radioactive World", will be conducted on Saturday, October 30, 2004, 8AM to 5PM at the James K. Davis Conference Center in observance of Energy Awareness Month and in partnership with Georgia Power Company and the American Association of Blacks in Energy. The Davis Conference Center is adjacent to Georgia Power Company headquarters, at 241 Ralph McGill Boulevard.

Topics will address the benefits of radiation as a form of energy, vital to health and well being and participating teachers will learn about natural uses of radiation, such as the decay of uranium and thorium in the Earth's core which keeps our planet warm. In addition, workshop sessions will include information about medical and industrial applications of nuclear science and technology, nuclear power for electricity generation - including advanced reactors and nuclear waste and transportation, food irradiation, biological effects of radiation, and hands on use of Geiger counters. Teachers may be eligible for education credits by attending this workshop.

A Networking/Relationship Building Luncheon will take place at Noon and is open to educators not participating in the workshop. This luncheon will provide an opportunity for educators to network and enjoy lunch with workshop instructors and participants and is complementary (free). Space is limited, and RSVP is required.
