Waiting For Biopsies Now a Thing of the Past

– Routine skin biopsies performed to diagnosis skin conditions can take up to a week before a patient finds out the results. This procedure, sending tissue sample to a lab - the “gold standard” for diagnosis -may cause anxiety in patients while waiting for the diagnosis. Today, a procedure “frozen tissue diagnosis” can give patients results in just 15 minutes.

During the 1930's, Dr. Frederic Mohs of the University of Wisconsin developed the Mohs surgical technique. He found that microscopic examination of this necrotic tissue showed well-preserved tissue and cell histology, the same as if the tissue had been excised and immersed in a fixative solution. This discovery ''Mohs technique" formed the basis for a method by which cancers could be excised under complete microscopic control. The technique involves fixing tissues in OCT (optimum cutting temperature) and freezing the sample for cutting with a cryostat then staining the sample for microscopic examination.

Mohs technique is commonly used to remove skin cancers but a cutting-edge Board Certified Dermatologist, Babar K. Rao, who practices in Manhattan, New York and Fresno, California has modified this technique to be used to diagnosis any skin condition including skin cancer, moles (nevi), and infections which may require immediate attention. “This procedure not only creates a precise diagnosis,” says Babar K. Rao of The Skin and Cancer Center http://www.skinandcancercenter.com ), “The advantage is that patients get immediate feedback and I can start treating the skin condition immediately.” This procedure is getting lot of attention from my patients in the past few months.
