New Scenarios Help Prepare First Responders for a Terrorist Attack

Laerdal Medical, in conjunction with The University of Miami's Gordon Center for Research in Medical Education, announces the release of Emergency Preparedness Scenarios - Terrorism. These scenarios will better prepare responders in the event of a Terrorist attack

Wappingers Falls, NY (PRWEB) December 20, 2008 -- Laerdal Medical, in conjunction with The University of Miami's Gordon Center for Research in Medical Education, announces the release of Emergency Preparedness Scenarios - Terrorism. These scenarios will better prepare responders in the event of a Terrorist attack.

These 25 new validated Terrorism Scenarios were developed for use with Laerdal's SimMan® Simulator and will help meet the training needs of Military, Hospital, Paramedics and other pre-hospital first responders.

Laerdal's Emergency Preparedness Scenarios cover five key terrorism threats such as Nerve Agent attacks, Improvised Explosive Device (IED), Radiological Dispersal Device (RDD), Cyanide Exposure and Vesicant agents. The five threat groups each contain five different scenario modules. The scenarios can be used individually or combined for multiple casualty events with multiple SimMan simulators.

These Scenarios are the result of a close collaboration between Laerdal and the University of Miami's Gordon Center for Research. Michael S. Gordon, MD, Associate Dean for Research in Medical Education at the University of Miami's Miller School of Medicine, the Director of the Center said, "This is a notable partnership between our Center and the leader in the development of lifelike patient simulators, and includes curriculum development, product distribution and research studies in medical simulation. These scenarios are a great step forward in our partnership."

The new Terrorism Scenarios were advertised in the September issue of the Journal of Emergency Medical Services (JEMS) and the August EMS Magazine. These 25 scenarios are available for purchase for $3750.

Founded 40 years ago, The Gordon Center is a statewide designated training center for Disasters and Emergency Response to Terrorism and instructs US Army Forward Surgical Trauma Teams prior to their deployment. The Center currently occupies a 34,000 square foot facility that includes a high-tech auditorium, self-learning laboratory, standardized patient training area, fire rescue vehicle, a car for extrication of trauma victims, hazardous materials decontamination showers, and a mock emergency department.
