Statement of Need:

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a chronic illness with an estimated lifetime prevalence between 15 and 25 percent. MDD is associated with significant morbidity and mortality with 8 to 19 percent of MDD patients committing suicide, the eighth leading cause of death in the United States. Despite the breadth of this health concern, management of MDD remains suboptimal. Current treatment goals focus on short-term symptom improvement and response to treatment. Outcomes should be aligned to long-term management with remission as the ultimate clinical goal. In this evidence-based psychCME TV activity, experts will define and differentiate between response and remission in MDD. Barriers to remission and potential treatment plans will also be elucidated. By focusing management strategies on patient function, relapse prevention, and long-term remission, patient outcomes can be maximized toward improved quality of life.
