The holiday scrooge is cystitis and it affects one in five women.

Both cystitis, also commonly known as urinary tract infection, and candida, a fungal overgrowth, occur year round and affect millions of females of all ages. Cystitis is the bane of womankind and its symptoms can range from mild discomfort to searing life-debilitating pain," says Angela Kilmartin, author of The Patients Encyclopedia of Urinary Tract Infection, Sexual Cystitis, and Interstitial Cystitis and Candida Yeast.

Cystitis is usually caused by bacteria passing through the uretha into the bladder," says Kilmartin. There are other ways to cause it, however, particularly during the holiday season where instances of cystitis and candida are usually high."

Kilmartin attributes the rise in cases to cold weather, increased alcohol intake, lack of rest, heightened stress, and irresponsible sexual behavior. Before making any last-minute trips to the lingerie shop for holiday gifts, learn which types of clothing to avoid. Purchasing the wrong kind of lingerie for Christmas can lead to several months of misery," says Kilmartin.

Women need to beware of the causes of these problems and the methods to prevent them, especially this time of the year," says Kilmartin. Pain and discomfort should never be a part of the holidays."
