Playwright's New One-Act Play to be Performed at Universal Theatre Winter Play Festival

Jeannette Angell's new one-act play, Flygirls, makes its debut at Universal Theatre's 2009 winter play festival in Provincetown, Massachusetts.

Provincetown, MA (PRWEB) January 9, 2009

FLYGIRLS, an imaginary conversation in the afterlife between Harriet Quimby, the first American woman to hold a pilot's license, and Amelia Earhart, will premiere January 23, 24, and 25 during Universal Theatre's 2009 winter play festival.

"I've always been fascinated by Harriet Quimby," says the playwright. "A character I named Sarah Martin in one of my early novels, WINGS, was based on Harriet. I received a lovely letter one day from a woman who wrote, 'My husband knew Harriet Quimby, and he says she would have loved the life you gave her.' I was very touched by that note and resolved to write more about her eventually. Eventually finally has arrived!"

Harriet Quimby not only was the first American woman to hold a pilot's license, she was the first woman to fly solo across the English Channel. She was a writer, a photojournalist, and an early feminist. Whether or not Quimby had an influence on Earhart, who lived later, is unknown; but the two women, Angell suggests, might have some things to discuss should they ever meet up in the afterlife. "The joy that they felt flying," says the playwright. "That's the main thing."

Joining Angell's FLYGIRLS are plays by J. Stephen Brantley, Myra Slotnick, Kelly DuMar, and more. Performances are at 7:30 pm on Friday and Saturday, and 2:30 on Sunday. More information is available at http://www.UniversalTheatre.com.
