America's Newest College Announces Campus Will Occupy One of Southeast's Most Historic Plantations

Today, the American College of the Building Arts announced its purchase of the historic McLeod Plantation. The college will build a campus on the Charleston, SC tract to house arts-oriented students majoring in high-end ironwork, stonecarving, plasterwork, carpentry, timberframing and masonry.

(PRWEB) December 3, 2004 -- A 300-plus year old plantation in Charleston, SC, today became the official home of the American College of the Building Arts, considered the newest licensed college in the Southeast - and possibly the nation. The campus will provide a backdrop for its 48 initial students to study classical building arts; those skills which put beauty into buildings.

The college will welcome its first class in August, 2005. Over time, the student body will total approximately 144. Applications are already being considered from candidates across the nation and from abroad.

The college is being modeled on a European guild system, and will offer students intensive training in the lucrative fields of building arts. In addition to job skills, students will acquire a liberal arts background in 2- and 4-year degrees. Students will also gain paid apprenticeships during the summer to help build skills and provide skilled - and highly needed - artisans to work nationwide with builders, architects and preservationists.

College administrators believe the need is great for highly skilled and well-educated building artisans. Studies have indicated starting salaries of these graduates will exceed those of general liberal arts students.
