Courtney Trempe Memorial Fund Gets Boost from Barkery by the Bay

The Courtney Trempe Memorial Fund for Dog Bite Victim Support will receive a boost thanks to the generosity of Lisa Grey, owner of the new pet boutique Barkery by the Bay located at 1 Water St, Unit A, Penetanguishene ON. Ms Grey will donate 10% of profits for January from the store which will hold its grand opening on December 12, 2004 from 12:00-5:00 PM. The Courtney Fund was created to honour the memory of eight year old Courtney Trempe of Stouffville ON who was killed by a dog in 1998. The fund is administered by non-profit Doggone Safe and will provide support for child dog bite victims and their families in areas where insurance does not cover.

Campbellville, ON (PRWEB) December 10, 2004 -- Doggone Safe is a Canadian federally incorporated non-profit organization dedicated to dog bite prevention education and victim support. The coroners jury inquest into Courtney Trempes death made numerous recommendations regarding public education, none of which have been implemented. Doggone Safe was formed with the mandate to facilitate implementation of the education based recommendations of the Trempe inquest jury. It tore my heart out when I heard about Courtneys death", said Doggone Safe co-founder Teresa Lewin, I had kept the newspaper clippings all this time". In honor of Courtney, the Courtney Trempe Memorial Fund for Dog Bite Victim Support was created and is administered by Doggone Safe. This fund will provide financial support to the families of child dog bite victims in areas such as trauma counseling, caregiver support and support for communication with peers while in hospital, where insurance payments fall short.

Lisa Grey is a canine behavior specialist, trainer of service dogs, trainer of bomb and drug sniffing dogs, breeder of Labrador Retrievers for specialty work and founder of the non-profit organization Adolescents at Risk and Canines Ontario. Ms Grey is a long time advocate of dog bite prevention education and has been very supportive of the efforts of Doggone Safe. Ms Grey said of the Doggone Safe Be a Tree program, hats off to the best educational package I have seen in years and a great public service that goes a long way to getting the message out about dog bite prevention and working toward eliminating dog bites to our children". She has generously offered to donate 10% of profits from January from her new store, Barkery on the Bay in Pentanguishene ON.

The Barkery is a pet boutique featuring specialty items for dogs as well as a Kitten Caboodles section for cats. The boutique will offer grooming by appointment as well as home made treats and boutique items crafted by Canadian artisans. At the grand opening this weekend there will be pet pictures with Santa (proceeds to go to a local man needing a service dog) and everyone who brings in a food item for the food bank will get a free bandana or small bag of Tiffany treats.

Donna Trempe, Courtneys mother said, I am thrilled that Doggone Safe has created this fund in honor of Courtney and I think it is wonderful that this new store is helping to keep the fund growing. I would like to see more educators, companies and individuals supporting the efforts of Doggone Safe. I would like dog owners to take their responsibilities seriously to become educated and to ensure that their dogs are properly trained, restrained and supervised and are not a risk to children."

The Barkery on the Bay is located at 1 Water Street Unit A Penetanguishene, ON and will hold its grand opening on Saturday December 11, 2004. Please call 705 549-0814 for further information.
