The new RFID/GPRS/CDMA Reader will provide a mobile connectivity for RFID applications that require a location independent solution, without a LAN connectivity.

Continuing SmartCode Corp.'s world's first RFID / WI-FI (802.11) Readers, the new RFID/GPRS/CDMA Readers will extend the wireless connectivity of the RFID Readers to cover multiple installations in remote sites without the Local Area Network (LAN) or Wireless LAN installations. The GPRS/CDMA capabilities enable the new RFID Reader to be instantly deployed anywhere within the cellular operator GPRS coverage.

Until today, remote RFID Reader installations had required a dedicated installation and LAN connectivity in each installed location. In a case the LAN interface was not available at the remote location, an additional high cost LAN infrastructure had to be installed in order to facilitate the LAN connectivity to the reader. Further more, remote field locations without proper infrastructure could not have been used for RFID Reading. With SmartCode's new RFID/GPRS/CDMA Readers, any desired location within the cellular operator coverage area can be immediately installed with a simple power connection. GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) offers faster data transmission via a GSM network within a range 9.6Kbits to 115Kbits. The main benefits of GPRS are that it reserves radio resources only when there is data to send and it reduces reliance on traditional circuit-switched network elements. Usually, GPRS data is billed per kilobytes of information transmitted while circuit switched data connections are billed per second. The latter is to reflect the fact that even during times when no data is being transferred, the bandwidth is unavailable to other potential users.

Until toady, the prices of RFID tags of an average of 50 cents, have created a cost barrier for companies worldwide to adopt the RFID solution as the replacement of the inefficient barcode technology.
