Denver Mother Encourages Literacy with Free Books to Community Desiree Baker and Usborne Books recently partnered with Westminster Hills Elementary in Westminster, Colorado in order to complete a reading incentive program, entitled 'Reach For The Stars. Roughly 38 students read 15 to 30 minutes a day for three weeks, raising over $1100 in sponsor donations. This enabled the students to choose $700 in free books for themselves and over $300 in free books and other educational goodies for their school. Denver, CO (PRWEB) December 30, 2004 --- Ms. Baker is always willing to search out ways to help encourage literacy in the community. As a parent and community member, I want to encourage children to read. Reach For The Stars is a reading incentive program where the goal is to motivate our children to read, keep them reading, and then reward them with books that grab their attention," she stated. There are many ways our community can receive free books through Usborne Books, but this program is something I love best to do. I look forward to the childrens eyes lighting up as I show them some of my personal favorite books from Usborne."
The children will benefit by reading and then receiving the books that are given to them. Each school/group will benefit by receiving their choice of cash and free books.
Participation involves the following: * Collecting pledges from friends, neighbors, and relatives that will "sponsor" their reading activity. * Reading (or being read to) and then logging the minutes. * Turning in pledge money and reading log to their teacher. * Selecting books that will be given to them.
All supplies are furnished to the school, including original forms to copy and several Usborne Books catalogs with over 1,200 titles to choose from. Ms. Baker is skilled at adjusting the program to fit each schools needs. There is no lengthy record keeping involved, and the forms are easy to read and use. There is absolutely no student-to-student competition, so everyone is a winner! To show support for schools that raise at least $1000, Ms. Baker and Usborne Books will add at least 10 percent more onto the total money raised.
Reach For The Stars is a nearly effortless way for schools or any other type of organization to obtain fun and educational books for their students. With school budgets being cut all over the country, this helps everyone involved.
