U.S. Regulators Recognize and Classify the Brand Cachaça Fazenda Mae De Ouro as a Distilled Spirit Specialty From Brazil. (Revised)* The Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau of the Department of the Treasury (formerly known as the ATF) has issued a letter approving the brand Cachaça Fazenda Mae De Ouro to be imported as a Cachaça (Distilled from Sugar Cane) rather than as a rum. Washington, D.C. (PRWEB) January 12, 2005 ÂWe are extremely pleased that the American ATF has granted us a waiver from labeling our product as common rum. Our authentic alambique (distilled using a copper still) cachaça is definitely not rum and this letter proves that we have convinced them that this true. stated Nahor Luz de Faria Júnior , the producer of Cachaça Fazenda Mae De Ouro while speaking at a press conference in Minas Gerais, Brazil. According to American laws, all spirits distilled from the juice of the sugar cane plant are classified as rum, and are therefore required to use the word Ârum on their label. While distinct grape brandies such as cognac are officially recognized under similar laws, U.S. regulators currently do not recognize any regional types of rum. This is due to the basic fact that rum, like vodka, can be produced by anyone, anywhere in the world. Cachaça Fazenda Mae De Ouro distinguished itself from other sugar cane based spirits with a traditional Brazilian production method that is not duplicated in rum distillation. ÂWhen we first submitted this authentic cachaça for BATF approval we were told that we could import it only if we included the phrase ÂBrazilian Rum on the label. said U.S. Brand Manager David R. Catania. ÂAfter a brief discussion with the producers we decided to reject this concession. To do so would have forsaken the rich traditions of cachaça production and its part in the history of Brazil. We just couldnÂt have that on our conscience, so standing on principal we fought and won the recognition that authentic cachaça deserves. And besides, you just canÂt make a caipirinha with rum .that would be a crime. What the Press is Saying About Cachaça Fazenda Mae De Ouro ÂCachaça Fazenda Mae De Ouro, the Brazilian spirit distilled from fresh sugarcane makes the best caipirinha.
