The Climate Project Builds Momentum to Persuade World Leaders to Take Urgent Action on Global Warming Jenny Clad, Executive Director of The Climate Project, delivers State of the Organization Address. Nashville, Tennessee (PRWEB) February 5, 2009 -- Jenny Clad, Executive Director of The Climate Project (www.theclimateproject.org) (TCP), said today that the grassroots organization founded by former Vice President Al Gore will become more proactive in the effort to combat the climate crisis. Clad delivered remarks in a video webcast to supporters worldwide.
"I'm excited to announce that The Climate Project is entering into Phase Two of its evolution. Our organization is ready to embark on a new era of advocacy and activism," said Clad.
The Climate Project will be hosting a North American Summit for its existing presenters May 14-16 in Nashville to launch a major movement by TCP, The Alliance for Climate Protection, and Al Gore to start building a formidable grassroots advocacy force to persuade policy makers to pass significant climate legislation this year.
"Now we are challenging you to take action. It is time to become more vocal in your communities to engage others to join our movement and to emphatically advocate our message to elected officials and business leaders to make the changes we need to solve this crisis," Clad declared.
Her remarks come on the heels of recent climate change testimony by Gore before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and as new studies are released on the long-lasting effects of global warming.
The biggest national and international agenda item coming up is the Copenhagen treaty on climate change, which will replace the current Kyoto treaty. The Kyoto Protocol, which aims to prevent the furtherance of global warming, runs out in 2012. Governmental and other representatives from 170 countries are expected to converge in Copenhagen this December for the climate conference.
Clad said The Climate Project will be taking the following steps as countries move closer to the Copenhagen treaty negotiations:
- TCP will lead an international effort to mobilize thousands of climate activists in key countries around the world to press their leaders to take strong positions to Copenhagen.
- TCP will be holding Training Summits for new and existing presenters in Europe, Asia-Pacific and Latin America so they can be equipped with the latest climate change material and will soon be holding a training in Beijing, China.
- TCP will establish a global website landing page to draw thousands of new members who can fortify international mobilization efforts and to provide information and resources for all who seek it.
- In the U.S, TCP presenters will work to convince members of the House and Senate to pass President Obama's climate legislation - and then - to ratify a strong international treaty early next year. TCP Canadian presenters will work on similar objectives with their Parliament.
The Climate Project was started by Gore in 2006 as a modest effort to train a few individuals to deliver a slide show based on his Academy Award-winning documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth. TCP has since grown a base of 2,600 volunteer presenters who travel the country and the world talking to community groups about the hazards facing the planet and what can be done to prevent more damage. TCP has fielded thousands of presentations in over 100 countries to more than 4 million people.
