Even Homer Simpson Wants to Get Cheaper Drugs From Canada

Episode of The Simpsons targets controvery of High Cost of Prescription Medications in the U.S. and getting them Cheaper from Canada

Calgary, (PRWEB) January 19, 2005 -- On January 16th, the popular television show The Simpsons" tackled the issue of the high cost for prescription drugs in the U.S.

In this episode, Homer Simpson, like millions of other Americans is forced to travel to Canada for safe and affordable prescription medications, because like so many others he can no longer afford to purchase them in the United States.

While some of us can sit back and laugh at the cartoon comedy of The Simpsons", for many U.S. citizens this episode was not a funny matter but a hard faced reality. Unfortunately, for over a decade now many U.S. citizens, most of which are seniors, underinsured or have no insurance at all, have been forced to travel to Canada in order to purchase their medications at a cost they can afford. For these U.S. citizens the choice has been to travel to Canada to pay less for their medications, or go without their medications and risk their health. It doesnt seem like a fair choice to have to make. Why should a person have to travel across the border to get safe affordable prescriptions and not be allowed to get them in their own country? In the past few years, some Canadian pharmacists have taken up the fight to assist U.S. citizens in obtaining prescription medications from the comfort of their own home and ordering them from a mail order pharmacy. Total Care Pharmacy (www.crossborderpharmacy.com) is one of these pharmacies.

Total Care Pharmacy is one of the pioneers in the mail order pharmacy business that has been waging the battle for U.S. citizens to get safe and affordable prescriptions from Canada. Unfortunately the battle seems to be very one sided with the mail order pharmacies being threatened and strong armed by the large pharmaceutical companies such as Pfizer and Merck, the FDA and even the government on both sides of the border. The large drug manufacturers Pfizer and Merck have advised Canadian mail order pharmacies that they will no longer provide them with products for exportation to U.S. citizens. It is rumored that Representatives of both the U.S. and Canadian government say President Bush discussed this issue with Prime Minster Martin during Bushs recent visit to Canada in an attempt to assist him in stopping the exportation of prescription drugs from Canada to the U.S. This is an accusation that both governments are trying to deny". The sad truth is that it seems only these mail order pharmacies seem to be concerned about the individuals health.

While the recent episode of The Simpsons tried to make light of a serious situation, hopefully it also enlightened some viewers of the high cost of prescription drugs in the U.S. The Nuclear Power Plant that Homer Simpson is employed by decided to eliminate health benefits and unfortunately many U.S. companies are being forced each day with decisions on how to reduce benefit costs. In fact, General Motors Corporation Chief Executive Office Rick Wagoner said drug costs prevented the worlds largest automaker from keeping the rise in health expenses below the industry average last year for the first time in a decade. The pharmaceutical component has really crushed us the last year or two", Wager said in an interview last week at the North American International Auto Show. In fact, medical expenses for GMs 1.1 million employees, retires and dependents now account for $1,400 of the price of every car and truck it sells and are increasing by at least 10 percent a year." In addition, a recent news article in the U.S. stated that Health-care spending climbed 7.6 percent, or four times the rate of inflation, to $1.68 trillion in 2003. That marked the fifth-straight year the cost of medical care expanded faster than the economy". The fact of the matter is the high cost of prescription drugs in the U.S. is no laughing matter.
