Social Media Benefit for Charity: Water To Be Co-Located in Second Life Can't make it to one of the 185 different real world meetups for this Thursday's Twestival to benefit charity: water? Join Twestival in Second Life to celebrate the amazing power of social media and the brilliant work of charity: water! New York, NY (PRWEB) February 10, 2009 On Thursday, February 12, tens of thousands of Twitter users will gather in more than 185 cities to celebrate the incredible power of social media and to benefit the work of charity: water, a non-profit that aims to provide clean drinking water to millions. Organized completely by volunteers using the social networking tool Twitter, as well as via email and websites, Twestival will take place on Thursday evening local time on 6 continents - and now in the virtual world. Global residents of Second Life will simultaneously gather in the virtual world to support charity: water's mission with an interactive festival gathering featuring live entertainment and a walk-through simulation of charity: water's water-drilling, life-changing work. The Second Life Twestival will be held on Moderne Island from 4:30pm SLT (Pacific Time) to 7:30pm SLT. Unlike the real world Twestivals, however, the Second Life benefit for charity:water will live on after the big global event on Thursday. The charity:water experience on Moderne Island will remain open for months to come, with new interactive features, tours, and events to be held in the educational space. Leigh Rowan, Chief Evangelist for Moderne Communications, the company behind the Second Life Twestival and virtual charity: water experience, states that "when I met Scott Harrison, founder of charity:water, about a year ago, I was compelled to work with him and to support his mission of bringing clean water to millions. Moderne is honored to be hosting Twestival in Second Life and we can't wait to unveil future support in Second Life for charity:water in the coming months." The idea to bring Twestival to Second Life came when Michael Kupfer, Marketing Manager for Moderne, saw the explosive growth of Twestival cities in very few days. "I knew we had a great asset at hand - a virtual world experience our digital advertising agency had built for charity:water - and I knew that we could help raise awareness and funds while educating Second Lifers about the importance of clean drinking water." Hence, with a few emails and a Twitter post, Twestival Second Life was born. Nicky Yates, Communications Manager for charity: water, noted her organization's enthusiasm about the grassroots organizing effort: "charity: water is in awe of how the group of Twestival volunteers have taken this event and then ran with it. We are excited to take part in our first global event." For more information on Twestival, please see the official Twestival website.
