Chesapeake, VA (PRWEB) January 27, 2005 -- When Danielle Montgomery and her husband bought their first home three years ago, she searched in vain for wallpaper designs that mirrored her children -- active and attractive little black boys and girls. She heard similar stories of despair from family and friends. But rather than stew in frustration, an idea simmered: why not put that product out there herself?

From that came Montgomery Wallcoverings, a boutique line of ethnically inspired patterns that reflect an array of multicultural imagery for home décor, beginning with that of African Americans. The company debuts with twelve border patterns, now available for presale in select markets and online (www.montgomerywallcoverings.com). Orders ship in March. The opening designs include brown angels; black girls as ballerinas; jazz scenes; and six African-inspired motifs in vibrant hues suitable for any room. Were designing for and appealing to the womans sense of culture, heritage and family," said company founder and CEO Danielle Montgomery. The initial line of Montgomery Wallcoverings will help African-American women fulfill the desire to make their homes comfortable and inviting for family, friends, and themselves. Subsequent lines will do the same thing for women of all ethnicities."

Born on a German military base and educated at Florida A&M and Florida State universities, the Alexandria, Va.-native is no stranger to diverse cultures. And as a trained research specialist, she also recognized an opportunity when she saw it. The latest tallies show the wallpaper industry totaled $1.04 billion in sales; borders accounted for $305 million of that, according to HFN newspaper, a trade publication. However, marketing demographics further show that the industry routinely overlooks an estimated 13 million African-American households annually, let alone other ethnic homes. Building on the experiences of her own household, with husband, Derek, and three children -- 9-year-old Dekari, 7-year-old Dasia, and 2-year-old Danai, Montgomery conveyed her ideas to a multiethnic cast of visual artists who could share her vision.

That roster includes Karen Y. Buster, a graphic and silkscreen artist whose serigraphs show influences of Elizabeth Catlett; Jan Anderson, a painter with a romantic brush; Donna Richardson, a painter whose images hearken the Renaissance period; and Wes Louie, an energetic illustrator who draws with a whimsical eye. The company began with borders because they are the most affordable and readily available item to spruce up" a room.

Our promise is to provide, beautiful, quality wallpapers for the woman of color," Montgomery said. We want to acquire a reputation for providing a cut-above-the-rest-yet-still-affordable products. When a woman is decorating a home or office, and thinks African, ethnic, or multicultural, we want her to think Montgomery Wallcoverings. With Montgomery Wallcoverings borders," she said, home will finally be home."
