Keyloggers Are Only the Tip of the Spyware Iceberg SpyCop today announced that keystroke recorders (key-loggers) are only a small part of the surveillance software threat facing today's PC user. FL (PRWEB) February 9, 2005 -- SpyCop today announced that keystroke recorders (key-loggers) are only a small part of the surveillance software threat facing today's PC user. As a result, users are receiving a false sense of security when relying on a privacy product solely designed for keyloggers. While many these products are very good at detecting or preventing keystroke recording, they do nothing against the vast array of other monitoring spy software including email redirectors & recorders, chat loggers, URL recorders and screen recorders. It is important that all computer users understand the overall threat and how best to protect themselves.
Similar to the confusion over advertiser spyware (adware) and monitoring spyware (surveillance spy software), users are often confused or totally in the dark regarding the complete surveillance spy threat. A keylogger is dangerous as it will record every key pressed while it is running, however, the other often misunderstood threats are just as, or more dangerous than a keylogger alone. Email redirectors are hidden spy programs which silently duplicate all incoming and outgoing messages to a third party. Chat loggers and URL recorders will monitor popular instant messaging programs such as AIM and Yahoo Messenger, regular IRC chat clients and web browsers. All communications and web site visits are recorded and sent back to the intruder. Lastly there are screen recorders, which silently take snapshots of a user's entire desktop and everything they are doing, and then package it up as a slide show for the intruder to view. Screen recorders can also email or upload these recordings for remote access. A keylogger is just one type of surveillance spy software.
It is important for users to purchase security solutions that are designed for a dedicated but broad enough purpose to receive the highest degree of protection. "Having a keylogger protection program is a great idea", explains SpyCop Founder, Grey McKenzie. "But it is not enough to protect you from the other spy software threats. You must have a product capable of detecting these additional threats, and SpyCop is that product."
