(PRWEB) February 13, 2005 -- Join the virtual audience for the next Cambridge-MIT Institute Distinguished Lecture.

Two very experienced entrepreneurs will discuss the challenge of building big businesses from science and technology start-ups.

Our speakers, Hermann Hauser and Bob Metcalfe are well-known and successful entrepreneurs who both have experience of turning scientific advances into real-world technology products, and have seen businesses they founded grow into large organisations.

At the next CMI Distinguished Lecture at 4.30pm (11.30am EST) on Friday 11 February 2005, they will be giving their views on the significant challenges of growing a start-up business into a larger company, and how to overcome the barriers to growth.

The Lecture is being broadcast live via the world wide web. If you would like to join the virtual audience at this event, then please go to http://www.cambridge-mit.org/events/lectures/11february for details.

Dr Hermann Hauser was an influential figure in the fledgling personal computer industry in the UK during the 1980s. Companies he has founded or co-founded include Acorn Computers, and Virata Corporation (now part of Conexant), which went from a 1990s start-up to a leading supplier of silicon chips for digital subscriber line (DSL) modems.

Dr Robert Metcalfe began his career as an engineer-scientist, and was working as a researcher for Xerox when he invented Ethernet, the local-area networking (LAN) standard on which he shares four patents. In 2003, Ethernet's 20th year, 184 million new Ethernet connections were shipped for $12.5 billion. As well as serving on the board of several companies, Bob is now a general partner at Polaris Venture Partners in Boston, Massachusetts, and specialises in Boston-based information technology start-ups.

The Lecture concludes with an interactive question and answer session. As a member of the online audience, you can also participate in this. When you are viewing the live webcast, you will see a link to a form that allows you to submit a question. Our speakers will answer as many questions as possible, from both the actual and virtual audiences, in the time available.
