Leptin a Major Factor in Breast Cancer, Obesity

Leptin hormone is a factor in obesity and breast cancer risk and growth.

Edina, MN (PRWEB) February 13, 2005 -- A recent study published in the January 31, 2005 edition of the Journal of Clinical Oncology has found that women who are overweight prior to a breast cancer diagnosis or who are lean but gain weight following diagnosis are more likely to have a reoccurrence or to die from the disease. Other researchers have further linked obesity, the hormone leptin, and breast cancer risk and mortality.

Byron Richards, CCN, is co-founder of Wellness Resources, Inc, a Minneapolis-based provider of high-quality nutritional solutions, was the first to do an exhaustive review of role the hormone leptin has in causing both obesity and breast cancer and breast cancer growth four years ago in the first edition of his groundbreaking book, Mastering Leptin. An expanded second edition was recently released this January, 2005. Richards states Leptin is essential for female health, reproduction and proper estrogen balance, and it is present in fat cells. It stands to reason that leptin resistance would result in increased risk for breast cancer."

What is Leptin?

Leptin is a powerful hormone produced in fat cells, in control of ALL other hormones in the body. It is essential for survival, guiding the proper response to starvation and use of energy throughout the body. Key signs of a leptin problem include: uncontrollable sugar and food cravings, late night eating, stress eating, weight gain around the middle, inability to reach a goal weight, yo-yo dieting, fatigue, and low-thyroid symptoms. Left unhandled these problems lead to obesity, fibromyalgia, diabetes, heart disease, and various types of cancer, including breast cancer.

Richards book, Mastering Leptin, can arm women with the information and strategies to manage their health and presents them in a way that is easy to understand and follow. Doing so can help correct leptin resistance, put a person back in control of their metabolism and on a stable path to healthy and permanent weight loss, as well as reduce the risk factors and mortality rate for diseases such as breast cancer.
