The sermons contained in Weapons of Mass Distraction remind me of two of my favorite quotes. First 'your silence wont protect you. Second, 'be the change you seek. This book reminds me that passive inactivity will not spare me or my loved ones from the pain of injustice. As a woman of the spirit, is also moves me to continue fighting for injustice, knowing that God is on my side." Ada Edwards, Houston City Council Member

Aswad is a passionate advocate of human rights with a special love for African Americans. His messages bring to light the ongoing battle between good and evil. It is written to attract the minds of all, especially our younger generation." Dr. Shelley McIntosh, Professor, University of Houston-Downtown and Minister.

In times like these, we need a prophetic word urging people of consciousness and goodwill, members of the faith community, and those who are just plain fed up with business as usual, to march on for justice and righteousness." Pastor Faraji Hudspeth, Pan African Orthodox Christian Church

Weapons of Mass Distraction" is a welcomed spirit-filled call to action; a theological dialogue with the great social issues of our generation that gives voice to the concerns of the silenced majority." This collection of hope-inspiring sermons, accessible to persons of all faiths, challenges democracy advocates to take responsibility for creating a world reflective of justice and equity.

About the author

Weapons of Mass Distraction" was written by Aswad Walker, a minister from the Shrine of the Black Madonna #10 of the Pan African Orthodox Christian Church in Houston. The church was founded by the late Rev. Albert B. Cleage Jr. (Jaramogi Abebe Agyeman), legendary civil rights activist, Father of Black Liberation Theology, and author of the groundbreaking work, The Black Messiah (1968). Walker earned a Master of Divinity Degree from Emory Universitys Candler School of Theology, where he published his honors thesis comparing the theologies and programs of Cleage and Marcus Garvey.

Walkers work as a community activist began during his undergraduate years at the University of Texas at Austin as a member of the Steve Biko Committee, an organization that fought for divestment in apartheid Africa. Also, Walker was one of the principle coordinators of the Million Youth Movement in Atlanta in September 1998 that saw thousands of young people from across the country gather in an attempt to learn how to better affect change in their communities. His work continues to this day as he now finds himself back on campus; this time as an instructor for the University of Houstons African American Studies Program, and at Texas Southern University where he is a writer and editor for many university publications.
