FCF Wild Feline Husbandry Course hosted by Butternut Farm Wildcat Sanctuary

The next Feline Conservation Federation Wild Feline Husbandry Course will be held April 9, from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm at Lane Aviation at the Columbus, Ohio International Airport.

Butternut Farm Wildcat Sanctuary is hosting this FCF continuing education course. $95.00 registration fee can be mailed to Butternut Farm, P.O. Box 711, Johnstown, OH 43031-0711.

The FCF course is an instructor led, multi-media presentation, complete with 83-page student text, workshops, and decorative certificate for students that pass the final exam.

Course topics focus on natural history of wild feline species, regulatory agencies and permits, facility design, handling equipment, diet and nutrition, health care, behavior and handling, and contingency planning.

FCF Husbandry Course instructor Carol Bohning notes contingency planning is an import aspect of responsible husbandry and is thoroughly covered in this course.

“The recent California tiger escape that ended in tragedy is a powerful illustration that being prepared for emergency situations can mean the difference between life and death”, says Bohning.

The FCF developed this comprehensive 8-hour course in accordance with a nationally

recognized standard for technical training known as the Systematic Approach to Training (SAT).

This course is the only one of its kind, providing continuing education valuable to wild feline keepers, aspiring owners, veterinarians, animal control officers, wildlife personnel and managers.

FCF Director of Conservation and Education Leann Montgomery notes that USDA Animal Health Care Inspectors have attended classes and given the FCF high marks.

Sunday April 10, students are invited to tour Butternut Farm Wildcat Sanctuary, home to cougars, bobcats and lynx. Butternut Farm is a non-profit 501 (c) 3 tax-exempt sanctuary providing refuge and educational outreach programs on wild feline conservation. A $10.00 tour fee is charged to help support the care of the felines at Butternut.

Membes of the Feline Conservation Federation are licensed breeders, educators, private zoos, individual owners, sanctuaries and conservationists.

FCF works with Earthways to support a 25,000-rainforest habitat named Playa de Oro. The Ecuador reserve is dedicated to protecting wildcat species.
